Ed and Mary Gritt have been serving the disabled since the mid 1980’s. In 1998, the Gritts founded Challenge the Outdoors, Inc., with the hope of providing outdoor recreational activities to disabled sportspersons throughout the state. After a number of years working with and supporting Challenge the Outdoors, the Gritts found that the organization's mission had strayed from their own vision. Consequently, along with other former members of Challenge the Outdoors, the Gritts decided to establish another organization that would be more focused on meeting the needs of the many disabled individuals who came to them for assistance. In 2001, Ed Gritt founded Beyond the Boundaries at Joe's Lodge, Inc. .
